WHO:July 29, 2004 PROVINCETOWN The Family Pride Coalition today commended the American Psychological Association (APA) for its endorsement of marriage equality for same-sex couples at its national annual meeting in Hawaii. The group also expressed opposition to discrimination against gay and lesbian parents. The APA is the nation's largest association of psychologists.

"Utilizing sound information and research, the APA continues to support full equality for our families," said Aimee Gelnaw, executive director of the Family Pride Coalition, the only national non-profit the only national non-profit organization dedicated to securing equality for LGBT parents and their families. "They share our understanding that families are best served when they have access to all the protections that come with marriage, and that children are best served when raised in stable and loving families. Our families are helped, and no one else is harmed, when we are treated equally."

The APA support follows similar gay- and family-friendly resolutions from other respected professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Council on Adoptable Children and the American Psychoanalytic Association.

The APA's policy announcement comes as the Family Pride Coalition gears up for its ninth annual Family Week celebration in Provincetown, Mass., July 31-Aug. 6.

In addition to celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Family Pride Coalition, Family Week activities will include workshops and social activities for parents and their children, and social and educational programming coordinated by COLAGE for youth nine years and older. Some of the adventures include whale-watching tours, barbecues, kite making and flying, sandcastle building, beach parties, a family parade down Commercial Street and a family dance. On-site registration is be $175.

The Family Pride Coalition is the only national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to securing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents and their families.
