> find a local parents group ::

Family Pride is happy to serve as the national coordinator between LGBTQ-headed families and the local groups that support them. We know that most often the best contacts and sources of support for LGBTQ-headed families come right from their own communities. Click on your state to see the parents groups in your area.

  • If you lead or are a member of a group for LGBTQ parents and their families, let us know. We want to list your group! Fill out your parent group profile. Just for filling out your profile, we'll mail you our Parents Group Kit.
  • If you wish to modify your parent group profile, email david.jacques@familypride.org.
  • If you can not find a group in your state, start a group of your own.
  • For additional information about Parents Groups, visit our Parents Group Corner at www.familypride.org/parents.

Florida

  • Orlando Gay Parents Group (updated 7. 200 7 )
    > mission: Our organization has two goals. First and foremost the playgroup provides the children of gay parents an opportunity to have fun with children from similar families. It is crucial to our children’s mental health and emotional well being that they interact with other families that “mirror” their own family! This way they can feel that their family is “normal” too! Furthermore, research has found that the adolescent years are especially difficult for children of gay parents. Strong bonds of friendship with other children of gay parents provide our children with a support system to help them weather the stormy passage through adolescence.
    Our second goal is to provide gay parents with an opportunity to socialize and network with other gay parents. Parenting can be especially demanding and challenging. Socializing with other gay parents is not only fun but it provides a forum for the exchange of parenting ideas and resources.

  • Lesbian Moms' Network (udpdated 1.2007)
    > mission: Lesbian Moms’ Network,Greater Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Area (Washtenaw Cty), MI Founded January 2000:
    The Lesbian Moms’ Network was “officially” founded by three local women, who mailed the first newsletter in January 2000 to approximately 50 families. The organization was created to pull together the larger community of lesbians who have chosen to become parents in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Area within Washtenaw County. We wanted to create a network that will be easily accessible for all the lesbian moms, their children, women in the process of choosing children, and their allies, and also, a way to welcome new families into our wonderful community.
    > how often do you meet: The non-profit organization has grown to over 250 area families! LMNetwork provides a variety of community services including, but not limited to, an annual educational parenting conference, monthly social events, a local newsletter, family care including meals for families with new additions, general resource support, smaller support group coordination, play groups, babysitting and resource exchanges, and an active email loop for information sharing. And one of the most important aspects of the organization is a way to connect with other families, and find information about lesbian parenting from local parents. We answer between 10-50 emails of inquiry a month.
    As an organization we have provided the following types of social events for family connections and fun: annual labor day family picnic, gymboree play days, summer private pool time, fall orchard trips, fishing, theatre and museum trips, and zoo explorations. All social events are coordinated by members who have an interest in the theme, or by the social event coordinator, in conjunction with the Board of Directors.
    Business Meetings:
    Monthly business meetings are held from 6:30pm —8:30pm, the third Monday of every month. All members are welcome to attend! You can join in the conversation, volunteer for tasks, help with the kids, or just stop by to feel connected. We meet at one of our board member's house, so the kids can utilize the playrooms. mission: Rainbow Families is a support group for lesbian and gay parents, their children and our non-gay family members on Staten Island. The group is co-sponsored by the Staten Island Children's Museum and the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Health and Wellness Project of the Community Health Action of Staten Island and welcomes all families.
    We attempt to have a discussion topic for these get-togethers; and we also allow a free-flow of conversation that can include anything from nutrition and learning how to get kids to eat vegetables, to creative ways to have time as a couple. We've discussed how best to get involved in schools, finding the best pediatrician, strategies for potty training and finding language to describe their family structure to others.
    > While parents chat, children can play with each other, under adult supervision. For the youngsters, the group provides a chance to experience families, who like theirs, may have two moms, or two fathers (or single moms or dads) in the household.
