breaking news: R Family Vacations & Family Pride announce collaboration

Family Pride on Feb 6th 2007

Family Pride is excited to announce our collaboration with R Family Vacations at Family Week in Provincetown, MA from July 28th - August 4. In addition, Family Pride will become the exclusive education providers on issues affecting gay and lesbian families on all R Family Vacation cruises. This groundbreaking collaboration will provide the best in entertainment and education to the thousands of families that participate in these unique vacations for gay and lesbian families.

In its 12th year, family week 2007 will be held from July 28th - August 4th, 2007, and anticipates over 500 gay and lesbian families in attendance.

R Family Vacations will bring their expertise in Gay and Lesbian family entertainment by creating family themed events including beach bonfires, picnics, dances, carnivals, a pirate dinner, as well as R Family’s own R- aMAHzing Race. Family Pride Coalition will continue to offer all of the workshops and educational content during Family Week.

R Family Vacations are best known for their large cruise ship vacations for Gay & Lesbian families. This past year the company was profiled in HBO’s documentary titled, “Rosie’s Gay Family Cruise,” and garnered two Emmy nominations. Rosie O’Donnell, whose partner Kelli O’Donnell, and Gregg Kaminsky, together run R Family Vacations, said this about the new partnership, “I am thrilled that R Family Vacations is now going to be involved in producing Family Week in Provincetown. We actually started R Family Vacations because Kelli and I took our kids to Family Pride’s Family Week and I saw the effect that it had on my children.” Gregg added, “We have been supporters of Family Pride for years and we are so excited to announce this formal partnership. We are both confident that together we are going to create the best Family Week ever. We are also honored that Family Pride will provide all of the workshops and speakers on all of our cruises.”

Jennifer Chrisler, Executive Director of Family Pride, said, “This is a perfect collaboration because we will each be able to do what we do best. Family Pride through strategic initiatives, groundbreaking programs and legislative battles, is dedicated to securing equality for all loving families. We are committed to making change, sharing information, and building community. R Family Vacations is the industry leader in Gay and Lesbian family travel. Our partnership ensures we are offering our families spectacular entertainment and outstanding value.”

I think it is great that Family Pride and rFamily has teamed together allowing Family Pride to do what they do best - working for families. However I have some concerns:
Looking at the rFamily website forum there are a lot of questions concerning Family Week - what it is, how it runs, etc. There are additional questions from others that want to go because it is an ‘rFamily Vacation’. There is very little information out there and I think it would be good if Family Pride puts a statement on the rFamily website specifically addressing what Family Week is and what it means to our children. For instance, one childless couple asked if rFamily was going to have adult entertainment (which we know there is plenty in PTown).
Also, will Family Pride members have first dibs on tickets? Do you have to be a Family Pride member (since there is no registrtion fee this year)?
I realize that a lot of people go for their vacation but it is like a working vacation. The core attendees are there to energize themselves to deal with issues back home and to get additional aid for their children to handle what they have to deal with. I would hope that rFamily will be able to attract some dynamic speakers in addition to the great entertainers they have had in the past. I am just concerned that Family Pride will be pushed to the sidelines and some of what is needed most will be lost to all the hoopla.

    HI
I think it is great that R Family Vacations will be getting involved. My partner and I took our 9 kids to family week last year, and we found
that there werent’ as many kids as we had thought, and found it
difficult to pay for the things going on, so we just walked around, shopped and made our own fun. Our kids had so much fun, it was nice
to see them not phased by anything going on. My 10 year old said to me, when am iI going to see a gay guy, and I said Megz you have walked by about a million already, she just cracked up. It was a great experience, and nice to not be stared at while holding hands, it was now just that we had 9 kids between us…I have 7 and my partner 2…We look forward to maybe someday being able to afford going on one of the R family cruises…

    ProudMom:

Thanks so much for writing in with your questions and concerns about how Family week will work this year since announcing our collaboration with R Family Vacations. First, let me assure you that there will be much more information available in the first week of April when R Family vacations will be updating their website with ticket information, programming notes and other helpful tidbits for those attending Family Week. Your suggestions about having more information about what happens at Family Week is a terrific one and we will be providing a lot more of that information on the new version of the R Family site. We will also post on the R Family forums as well.

To answer some of your questions – here’s the skinny:

There will be no registration fee this year for Family Week. Any family/person/grandparent/extended family member/friend who wants to come to family week can come and register for free. Simply fill out the R Family sign-up form and you will get updates, information, programming schedules and other important information. Certain events will be ticketed – they include a brunch, two dinners and the dance. The rest of the activities will be provided free of charge. Additionally there will be a separate registration fee for those youth participating in the COLAGE programming and that registration can be done at their website. Family Pride will continue to be very involved of every aspect of Family Week and there will again be workshops and educational opportunities for those attending. But our partnership with R Family Vacations also means that there will be great entertainment – including themed dinners and Rosie’s own Broadway Belters. In addition, they are working to bring additional entertainers to do special family themed shows during the week at various clubs and entertainment venues in Provincetown.

As always – Family Week will be an amazing experience for both those who’ve been coming for many, many years and those that are joining us for the first time. We are proud of how much this event has grown and look forward to seeing you all there. Check back again in about a week to see all the new information.

My family and I have been attending family pride week @ P-town for the past couple of years and we are looking forward to network with other families once again. We’ve been great supporters and participants of all demonstrations, rallies, parades and protest since the late 70’s for our rights ..We are honored and proud to be a part of the tradition… and its great that R family is a major donor and sponsor!! We think its absolutely generous that there is no registration fee to attend …Kudos to everyone involved in making this magical event possible for the LBGT community..

    Hi out there,

Hope everything is going on good and nice that way, let me get to what I have to tell you. We the gay and lesbian community of Uganda have big problems here we need your help from our brothers and sisters out there. We went to the papers some days back to try and ask for our rights but now the government is after us, as of now we are undergound the penal code act sections 140 and 141 make it criminal. So we are criminalised, persecuted and considered as social misfits yet we are normal humanbeings who deserve respect and rights. So we are asking you to tall the community out there how we need your help. We need help of any kind. We will be so happy if we get you help. So hope to hear from you soon.

    Wasswa Michael
